パイントグラスとは?容量・形とキャンプへの持ち運び方

What is a pint glass? Capacity, shape, and how to carry it for camping

Once you’ve settled in for your campsite meal, it’s time to pour your favorite drink into your favorite glass. Paying attention to the small tools at hand, in addition to your tent and table, adds another layer of enjoyment to your relaxation time.

With that in mind, you might be considering a pint glass. You may have questions like, "How is it different from a regular glass?", "How many milliliters does it hold?", or "Can I take glass to a campsite?"

When choosing a pint glass, don't judge the capacity by the name alone; check the indicated capacity, the shape for easy handling, and the size for protected transport. This article explains everything from the meaning of a "pint" to how to handle one while camping, and also introduces our black pint glass, "BLACK MISTA."

What is a pint glass? How many ml is 1 pint?

"Pint" is a unit of capacity, not a shape

A pint is a unit of volume. When used for drinks, one pint corresponds to approximately 473ml in the US system and approximately 568ml in the British system. Even though both are called "one pint," the actual volume differs depending on which system is used.

System Capacity of 1 pint (approx.)
US liquid pint approx. 473ml
British imperial pint approx. 568ml

For conversion of units, refer to the Measurement Canada guide. We are discussing units used for beverages here.

Check the "ml" indication for each product when purchasing

Pint glasses are popular for drinking beer and other beverages. However, just because a product is named "pint glass" does not mean they all share the same capacity or shape.

For example, the indicated capacity of the BLACK MISTA is 490ml. Do not assume it holds 500ml just because it is a "pint glass"—be sure to check the numerical value in the product description. If stated, check whether the figure represents full capacity or the recommended volume for pouring.

Choosing capacity based on the drink and room for foam/ice

Beer requires space for both liquid and foam

If you fill a glass to the brim, it becomes prone to spilling when you lift it. For beer, account for the foam and check if the glass has more capacity than the amount you usually drink from a can or bottle.

The difference between 490ml and 350ml is numerically 140ml. However, this does not necessarily translate directly into enough space for foam. Since foaming and pouring methods vary, you can adjust by pouring in stages while watching the glass.

The contents of a 500ml can will not fit into a 490ml glass all at once. If you drink long cans, you will need to pour in stages. If you prefer to pour everything at once, choose a glass that provides space for the 500ml of liquid plus room for foam and to prevent spills.

For drinks with ice, consider the liquid volume separately

For iced coffee, sparkling water, or highballs, the amount of liquid you can pour decreases as you add ice. It is easier to choose if you separate "how many ml of liquid you want to drink" from "how much ice you want to add."

If you prefer to drink in small portions rather than pouring a lot at once, there is no need to prioritize a large capacity. Comparing it to the capacity of the glasses you use at home will help you visualize the amount you'll use while camping.

Checking the shape for grip, comfort, and placement

Apply diameter and weight to your actual usage

Even with the same capacity, the tactile experience differs between a tall, thin glass and a shorter, wider one. Look at the shape of the body—where your hand will actually grip—in addition to the diameter of the rim.

If you have smaller hands, check whether you can comfortably hold it with one hand and support the weight when filled. Since the weight of the beverage will be added to the weight of the glass itself, do not judge based solely on the lightness of the empty glass.

Consider the feel of the rim and the appearance on the table

The thickness and flare of the rim affect the sensation when your lips touch it. If possible, handle the item in person to check its weight and rim finish to ensure it suits your preferences. Online, close-up photos of the rim can also serve as a reference.

When camping, where you place the glass is also important. Avoid the edges or seams of the tabletop and slanted surfaces; ensure you have a spot where the base can sit stably. Avoid moving the table while drinks are placed on it. If using a cup holder, check the dimensions of the opening and base, as well as its compatibility.

How to pack for carrying to the campsite

Protect each glass individually and separate from hard objects

If you're bringing glass pint glasses, prepare by considering what they will contact during transport. To prevent glasses from hitting each other or metal tools, wrap each one individually in soft cushioning and place them in a case with dividers.

Protect the sides and rim, not just the bottom. Avoid cases that are too large (allowing movement) or too small (requiring force to squeeze them in). Even with a protective case, you cannot completely prevent breakage from drops or crushing.

Check the case's interior dimensions and how you pack your gear

When choosing a case, look at the interior dimensions, not the exterior. Ensure there is enough room for the glass itself plus the thickness of the cushioning. Even when using generic cases, confirm that the items fit comfortably once protected.

  • Do not stack glasses directly; separate them one by one.
  • Do not pack cutlery or small items inside the glass.
  • Store where heavy luggage won't crush it from above.
  • Secure the case so it doesn't slide or tip over in the car.
  • After unpacking, check for any chips or cracks in the rim.

For trips involving long walks or scenarios where light packing is a priority, consider metal or resin cups as alternatives. Choose based on your transport method and your preference for the vessel you want to use on-site.

Use and care during camping and after returning home

Check heat resistance and dishwasher compatibility for each product

You cannot judge heat or impact resistance based on glass thickness alone. Tempered glass and heat-resistant glass have different properties. If you wish to use hot beverages or a dishwasher, check the specific indications for the product.

The BLACK MISTA is not made of heat-resistant or tempered glass and cannot be used in a microwave or dishwasher. Use it for cold drinks, and avoid pouring boiling water into it or heating it near a fire. Washing a chilled glass with hot water can also lead to sudden temperature changes.

Wash with a soft sponge and dry completely before storing

After use, wash with mild detergent and a soft sponge, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid abrasive sponges or metal scouring pads that can scratch the surface. Do not force your hand inside and twist forcefully while washing.

Once water is removed and the glass is dry, return it to its dry cushioning and case. If you find chips or cracks, do not continue using it; consider a replacement. For glasses with a black finish, be mindful of rubbing against other gear to help simplify your storage method.

How to choose the black "BLACK MISTA" pint glass

For those who want to complete their set with glasses that match a black table, or who want vessels with a calm atmosphere that can also be used at home, the BLACK MISTA pint glass is the perfect choice.

Left is Deeply Black, right is Smoky Black. The appearance of the color changes depending on light and the drink.

Choose your preferred look: translucent black or deep black

BLACK MISTA comes in "Smoky Black," which is faintly translucent, and "Deeply Black," which features a deep, solid black. If you want to enjoy the color of your drink and the way light passes through, consider Smoky Black; if you want the black aesthetic to extend even to your hand, consider Deeply Black.

Even when coordinating with black gear, everything doesn't need to be the same texture. You can enjoy creating visual interest by mixing materials—for example, pairing the gloss of the glass with a matte surface on the table.

Check not just capacity, but also size when packed

When choosing a case for camping, consider the 9cm diameter and 15cm height plus the thickness of the protective material. The storage case is not included. Also, as stackability is not explicitly stated on the official product page, do not assume they can be nested for storage.

Frequently asked questions about pint glasses

Are pint glasses and tumblers different?

Tumbler is a general term for a drinking vessel without a handle or stem. Many pint glasses fit this description, so there is no need to view them as completely different categories. When choosing, look at capacity, material, and shape rather than the name.

Can it be used for drinks other than beer?

It can be used for cold water, sparkling water, iced coffee, and more. If using ice, reduce the amount of liquid to adjust. For hot drinks, you must check the glass's heat resistance and usage conditions.

Is the BLACK MISTA an insulated tumbler?

It is a glass vessel, not a vacuum-insulated tumbler. If long-term cooling is your top priority, compare it with products that specify heat-retention or cooling performance. BLACK MISTA is a choice for those who want to enjoy the look of black glass and the time spent pouring their drinks.

What should I prepare if I'm taking it camping for the first time?

First, prepare cushioning to protect each glass and a case that fits them snugly. Then, decide where to pack them and ensure you have a stable spot for them at the campsite. If the capacity, handling, and transport method suit your style, you'll easily find a favorite vessel you'll want to use both at the campsite and at home.
